June 2010 marked the 40th Anniversary of the CSW/L.A. Pride festival celebration and parade. As a pre-pride week kickoff, GLEH and CSW/LA Pride paid tribute to our GLEH residents on June 4th in the Schutrum-Piteo Courtyard of Triangle Square. A festive afternoon celebration of cocktails, food, cake and recognition to our LGBT elders who paved the way and made it possible for us to celebrate 40 years of pride in LA. Many GLEH residents were pioneers of the LGBT Civil Rights and HIV/AIDS movements on the West Coast.

Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing and those who made our first building, Triangle Square, a reality have made history. The over 112 seniors who call Triangle Square home have been instrumental in our success and in the making of their own history – as residents of the first low income housing program for LGBTA seniors. Nearly three years have passed since Triangle Square opened its doors and during this time, it has been important not only in terms of settling in and learning from each other, but important in identifying some critical issues faced by many of our elders.

Currently, there are an estimated three million LGBT elders, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a figure that will more than double in the next 25 years. But if they don’t want to spend their older years in what are typically heterosexual retirement communities, where will they live as they age if they can’t, or don’t want to, stay in their current home?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services just its decision to cover HIV screening for Medicare beneficiaries. The decision is effective immediately. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement: “Today’s decision marks an important milestone in the history of the Medicare program. Beginning with expanding coverage for HIV screening, we can now work proactively as a program to help keep Medicare beneficiaries healthy and take a more active role in evaluating the evidence for preventive services.”
