Gay Seniors Gaining More Options for Retirement Communities

As the number of baby boomers turning 65 climbs, so does the number of aging lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) people. Currently, there are an estimated three million LGBT elders, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a figure that will more than double in the next 25 years. But if they don’t want to spend their older years in what are typically heterosexual retirement communities, where will they live as they age if they can’t, or don’t want to, stay in their current home?

Medicare now covers HIV screenings

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services just its decision to cover HIV screening for Medicare beneficiaries. The decision is effective immediately. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement: “Today’s decision marks an important milestone in the history of the Medicare program. Beginning with expanding coverage for HIV screening, we can now work proactively as a program to help keep Medicare beneficiaries healthy and take a more active role in evaluating the evidence for preventive services.”

L.A. gay retirees get first low-cost housing units

The nation's first low-cost housing development aimed specifically at gay, lesbian and transgender retirees opened its doors in Hollywood on Thursday with a promise to provide a dignified haven for elderly homosexuals to live out their days. Calling it a historic day for the gay and lesbian community in both Los Angeles and the United States, officials opened the 104-unit affordable housing complex, built around a pool and open courtyard and complete with an activity center and disabled facilities.
